  Orange County Department of Education Outdoor Science School is a week long science education adventure located in the beautiful San Bernardino mountains of Southern California. At our program, students expand their knowledge of the natural sciences (biology, botany, geology and astronomy) through hands-on activities and hikes. From these experiences, students gain respect and appreciation for the environment while experiencing personal growth. As an instructor, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable leadership skills and teaching experience as you guide, educate, and live with students. Bring your talent for teamwork, and enthusiasm to a wonderful residential program. There is great potential for personal and professional growth.

  Outdoor Science School Program operates from September to June. Room and board is provided during the week.  Weekend housing is not available. Transportation is not provided.

Additional employment information:

The department provides room and meals for the staff from Monday lunch through Friday brunch, except holidays and the days the sites are closed.  Instructors live in cabins with students. No weekend housing is provided for staff and/or family members. Pets are not permitted. Employees must provide their own transportation as there is no public transportation to the sites. The sites are under direct supervision of the Orange County Department of Education therefore they are non-smoking facilities, drugs or alcohol are not permitted. If there are physical limitations that hinder the performance of essential job-related functions, a written medical clearance may be required from a personal physician at time of the job offer. A limited medical benefit package is provided. Advancement opportunities may be available. Fingerprinting, T.B.test, CPR/First Aid, and a physical are required and are provided by Orange County Department of Education.

 Outdoor Classroom

California's largest residential Outdoor Science School  currently operating six sites.

 

You may compliment formal college course work in science and gain teaching experience. (This position does not require a teaching credential.)

Essential Duties

  • Supervise 10-12 year old students in a residential setting Monday through Friday. Oversee cabin cleanup, dining hall duties, meals, showers, rest time, bedtime, and other group living activities.

  • Lead pre-planned academic science activities in the outdoors on hiking trails 1/4-2 miles in length; plan and organize crafts, drama, and recreation activities; demonstrate dance steps for line, folk, and square dances.

Qualifications:

  • Recent experience with children in education programs, youth groups, camps.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Work Atmosphere

  • Residential setting Monday through Friday

  • Fast-paced with high pressure

  • Elevations of 5,000 to 8,000 feet.

  • Weather conditions can fluctuate;  rain, snow, ice, heat. May experience earthquakes, landslides, fire, floods, high winds.

  • Will be exposed to wildlife, and a wide variety of plant life and insects.
